About McKinley

"Student Achievement First"

Located in North Long Beach, McKinley Elementary is a neighborhood school with a diverse student population. With “Student Achievement First” as the primary focus, it is our mission to create a school community which works together to educate and nurture the “whole child” in academic and character development.  We dedicate ourselves to empowering every McKinley student as an achiever through high expectations of ourselves and our students.  The instructional focus for McKinley is literacy.  The staff continually seeks to employ the most effective strategies to improve the reading and writing skills of all students.

Beyond the district’s core instructional programs, McKinley is a busy place with many different programs focusing on “Student Achievement First.”  These programs are designed to enhance instruction, equip students with the skills necessary to peacefully resolve conflict, create an atmosphere for enjoyable learning beyond the school day, increase awareness of how to manage health issues that may impede learning, and improve educational opportunities for parents.

We are committed to working together with our families to ensure that children attend school every day, ready to learn.   We welcome and honor our parents-as-literacy agents both at home and at school.  We regularly examine students work and plan how to use the best educational practices to enhance the literacy skills of ours students.  We seek to provide a rigorous and challenging curriculum that addresses the needs of all students.

We celebrate reading at McKinley and a large number of McKinley students participate in our Home Reading Club.  Many members of the community and surrounding businesses help us celebrate by participating in our annual Read Across America Celebration.
“Student Achievement First” is more than just a motto, it is the belief that makes McKinley a great place to work and learn!
